The Plan Of A Lifetime

lifeplanpic2  We make all kinds of plans for our life.  We set our goals.  We set a plan of action toward that goal.  We make lists of the tasks that need to be completed in order to reach the plan for our life.  There is nothing wrong with having goals.  There is nothing wrong with organizing ourselves to accomplish our desired outcome.

Oh………….it would be a very long list if I were to compile all the “plans” I made for my life.  Just as long would be the list of how many of those plans did not come to fruition.  I am talking about the big overall plan for our life.  The plan that includes what I am I here to do?  Where am I meant to do it?  What is my purpose?  The things along the way like our education, profession, relationship choices, places of residence or organizations to join all can lead to the realization of the big questions about the meaning of our life.

Whether we actually voice it or not, every one of us has a deep longing to understand our purpose here – not only what we are here to do, but also what we are here to give, receive and understand.  We want to know WHY we exist.  We all have the feeling that we have something of true worth to contribute and gain.  I learned something very valuable years ago when I was working in a nursing home.  When people come to the final days of their life on Earth, they do not look back and regret things they did.  They look back and regret the things they did not do.  And they reflect and ask, “Did I do what I was here to do?”

Life itself  KNOWS why you are here.  The Spirit within us – a little piece of God – KNOWS.  With all the distractions of life and all the messages that it is WE who have to decide our purpose, we forget that we don’t have to make our purpose.  It is already set.  Our culture guides us to “go for it” by making all our own plans and then “keeping our nose to the grindstone” or “taking the bull by the horns” (which aren’t real bright things to do if you think about it).  The best things, the wisest things I have ever chosen are things that my own mind would have never come up with in MY plan.  They are turns in the road that led me to my highest good out of some event or realization that came in from an unexpected place.

To live the purpose for which I was designed to fulfill (that longing to be all that I am created to live), I need to not ask myself what it is, but ask Spirit/God.  I ask everyday for it to be revealed to me in all and any ways that will be obviously noticeable.  There is the BIG request that my overall life purpose be revealed.  But the steps to that accomplishment comes in my asking for each day, each event in that day to be used for the purpose for which God created me.

The message of this writing today is to encourage you to first ASK for guidance.  Do so by stating your desire to be all that you are created to be.  Then state that you know there IS a plan – overall -and in every moment of the day.  And then say you are ready to be shown and that you are willing to follow Life/Spirit/God’s lead.  No signs you have missed up until this moment have blocked your opportunity to still fulfill your greatest purpose.  It’s not too late – ever.  There is no question or willingness that God is more delighted with than our request for guidance and our desire to follow.  And there is no greater joy one can ever experience than when living in the fulfillment of the plan for which they are created.

There IS a plan for your existence.  You are not made to KNOW it automatically.  You ARE made to sense there is a plan/purpose.  You are meant to ASK and FOLLOW because the plan is grander and greater than our human mind can even conceive in forethought.  And we do not know it automatically because our greatest learning comes in the steps along the path to our understanding.  So take it moment by moment knowing the way is being revealed.  Ask for guidance.  Affirm your willingness to be all you are created to be.  And then……………follow the leads.  There is a a wonderful plan for your lifetime.  Go to the One who knows it.

THE PRAYER:  Dear God:  I long to fullfill all the reasons I am here on Earth.  I trust you to reveal it to me – in every person I meet, in every task I perform, in every activity of this day.  My goal is the inner peace that comes from doing and being who you designed me to be.  You are my teacher and my guide.   I look forward to the revealing day You have for me.  I look forward to Your plan for my lifetime.  I’m paying attention.  If my mind wanders, I give you permission to get my attention.  Thank you.  AMEN.

Notice The World – Strengthen Your Faith

miracleinaflowerpic  We are constantly motivated toward things we desire even though can not yet see them.  We move through life all the time propelled by a desire to arrive at a certain destination or to attain something which we can not see at this moment.  We believe it’s there if we just move on and strive diligently.  For example, at the present moment we can not see ourselves sitting at the desk of that corporate office, but we keep on with the education or our current job because we believe doing so will get to that not yet seen place.  We do not see yet the body of a fit and trim self, but we workout or diet because we believe at the end of our efforts it will appear.  We do not see ourselves yet fluently speaking some foreign language, but we study and practice because we believe it will be there if we keep going.  We do not yet see that partner/wife/husband who will be a great match for us and, yet, we look for them because we believe they exist out there somewhere.  We do not yet see that book with our name on it as its author, and yet we write because we believe that if we keep going it will someday be visible.  I need not go on with more examples (although I could), but you get the point.

Believing in something that one can not yet see is Faith.  There is really no such thing as a faithless person.  We either have faith that something IS or we have faith that it IS NOT.  There are varying degress of our conviction to Faith, but there is no faithlessness.  I often hear it said that having Faith in things (like the examples I gave above) is easier because one has seen it evidenced in other’s lives or previously in their own.  I also often hear that Faith in a power (which I call God) greater than themselves which oversees and creates goodness on our behalf is very difficult because there is no way to prove it.

We, however, steer our lives constantly toward things for which there is no actual”proof”.  Because one sees another in a great relationship, it is not “proof” that one is coming for them too.  Because one sees someone else at a great job in a wonderful office is not “proof” that we will get there also.  But we have a belief that the opportunity exists for us out of our inspiration in seeing it active somewhere else.  Can we really say there is no inspiration toward having Faith in whatever name you would use for God?

Well, let’s see……………… the seasons change at exactly the right time year after year, the planets all rotate at the perfect pace and space around the sun and moon,  embryos become living breathing human beings that walk, talk, see, breathe and become adults.  The little acorn somehow turns into a mighty oak tree.  Our lungs breathe and our hearts beat without our doing a thing to make it happen.  Gravity keeps us from flying off the Earth into outer space.  Animals know just when it’s time to build nests, store food, conceive their young.  Our skin and cells are constantly in the process of restoring themselves.  There are SO many examples of the Universe’s wonder that I could go on for pages.  The point is, we all have Faith in these processes – so much Faith we don’t even think about them.  We just trust them to occur.  ALL of these and millions of other Universal processes are examples of a power greater than ourselves at work. And all of Its work is going on precisely so that life can exist and thrive – including OUR indivdiual life.

When we really notice and examine the amazing process of nature and our human bodies, we are easily awed.  We take so much of it for granted that we miss its lesson to us.  Nothing moves without some form of energy behind it making it do so.  We can’t see it, perhaps, but the energy is there.  When we see the energy we can ask, “What is the Source of that energy?”  We may say, “Well it is the wind or the sun or the lunar pull or oxygen.” But what is the Source/Power BEHIND that energy?  Can you see it? No. But do we have Faith that it is there?  Yes, we do.  We do not doubt that the sunny days will warm us and the Earth.  We do not doubt we will take our next breath because we have faith there is oxygen.  We do not doubt that the tides will ebb and rise.  But we do proclaim to sometimes not have proof worthy of Faith in a power greater than ourselves.

I live in a town on the Pacific Ocean.  People stand at the edge of the shore and marvel at the immensity of the ocean.  They watch the rhythmic in and out of the waves and marvel at their power.  Some years ago it dawned on me that what is more awesome then the wave is the power BEHIND the wave.  I have become known for using that statement often:  “Be less awed by the wave itself than the power behind that wave.”

The power that moves behind the beat of your heart.  The power that is behind the seed’s transformation into a tree or plant.  The power propelling the opening of a bloom into a beautiful flower.  The Power which is behind the howling wind.  That Power is the energy of God/Spirit/Life.  When we decide to notice It, we become more inclined to professing and trusting that there is, indeed, a great power that creates and sustains our life.  When we are awake to It, we strengthen our Faith in what we can not see.  We move toward It, trusting It simply by being aware and acknowledging Its presence.   The more intimately and definitely we identify with this Power behind all life, the more assured and peaceful life becomes for us.  Our Faith in It is the only assurance of inner peace.  Focus on the power behind the wave.  It sustains you.  It moves you forward on just the right path at just the right time.  It restores you when you are depleted.  It is the Power in which you live, breathe and have your being.  It is the Source of inner peace.

Quieting The Taskmaster In Our Mind

meditation pic  I’m writing this on a Monday.  I allowed myself a Sunday away from all work.  I have decided to keep true to that practice.  For my own well-being, I realize I must set that intention and hold to it.  My type of work is not a schedule set in stone.  I decide my own time for clients, writing, speaking or teaching.  Sounds like freedom, doesn’t it?  It is, indeed.  However, I have found out another side to that kind of freedom:  I am harder on myself than any boss for whom I ever worked.   When the office doesn’t close at a specific time at the end of a day or close due to a National Holiday, I don’t feel permission to break from work.  What I call “The Taskmaster” in my own mind keeps prodding me, reminding me of all that still needs doing, amplifying the importance of its being done RIGHT NOW.  It chastises me subtly, but determinedly, for taking any time to breathe and rest.  A really frustrating  thing about the Taskmaster  is that no matter how much I accomplish, it constantly creates more to do.  Therefore, the list is eternal and never-ending.  The Taskmaster has no mercy and living by its dictates is a form of slavery.

The Taskmaster is my own creation.  No one outside myself is constantly over my shoulder checking off a list and telling me I’m falling behind or that I will never get it all done.  If someone outside myself does ask for something from me,  they ask it only once (well, maybe twice).  The Taskmaster of my mind, however, is relentless.  A brilliant teacher and author, Marianne Williamson, once wrote about people in our lives who may have pushed, criticized or been mean to us, “They may have been mean, but they were nothing compared to what we do to ourselves.  We are vicious.”

The biggest deterrent to our inner peace is fear.  And the Taskmaster in our own mind is the perpetrator of that fear.  It chatters incessantly.  It tells us we’ll never get it all done.  It tells us we’re falling behind.  It tells us we aren’t trying hard enough, that we’re lazy, we’re incapable, we’re unorganized, we’re distracted.  To sum it all up, it constantly tells us this……….. we’re not good enough.

I can become entranced – moving with spiritual unconsciousness to my mind’s Taskmaster, obeying every demand and command……….and then………….. my Spirit bolts into my consciousness and says “Wake up!”  There was a time in my life (the first 35 years of it) that the only authority I was aware of was my Taskmaster.  But then, I learned differently.   THANK GOD!  I came to understand that I was not born to be a slave to things and duties.  I came to understand that my life has meaning AND that the purpose for which I am created unfolds perfectly when I trust a power greater than myself alone is in charge.  I learned this power, (which I call God, but the name is not of importance), is ALWAYS rooting for my success, ALWAYS giving me exactly what I need to live to my full capacity and It NEVER directs me through harshness or criticism.  This new understanding is what turned my life around from pain to peace.

But still, I have my times when I fall back into old habits.  For me, the day after my decided day off -Monday – is the day when I am most prone to allowing that merciless voice of my imaginary Taskmaster to reappear with vigor.  The biggest factor to my falling prey to this imposter voice today was that I did not start my morning with at least 5 -10 minutes of quiet time/meditation.  Why did I skip it?  Why, of course, you got it!!  There was TOO MUCH TO DO TO TAKE TIME FOR THAT!  Oh how different a day is when I omit that first practice of being still and turning my day over to the One who is in charge.

A Course In Miracles states that “Five minutes spent with God each morning guarantees that He will be in charge of your thought process throughout the day.”  And Its voice sounds and feels completely opposite of the Taskmaster’s voice.  Under It’s guidance, I get everything done in exactly the right order, at exactly the right time and in just the right way.  Everything falls into place.  No matter how busy, when I am aware that I am depending on something wiser and stronger than myself alone, I am at peace.  The critical driving voice of my own mind – no matter how much I accomplish – never lets me feel at peace.

So I was reminded – yet again – today, I am not meant to go it alone.  I am not designed to be the Master of my own fate.  The only way I am master is to make the decision to trust God/Spirit….. or not.  That is my free will.  Making the decision to intently remind myself by spending a few minutes each day in touch with “the boss”, makes all the difference in the world as to how my day plays out.  It is not only more peaceful.  It is not only more productive.  It is not only easier.  Doing so, leaves open the door to receiving miraculous moments I would never see in the dark prison camp where my full attention is on the Taskmaster.  So, I assure you, Tuesday will begin differently than Monday began.  Thank God!

THE PRAYER:  Dear Spirit/God:    You know the day that lies ahead for me.  Because You are with me every step of the way, I know only goodness – even  miracles – await me.  I give You any temptation for me to be hard on myself.  If I begin to move into harshness, criticism or worry,  rush in and remind in Your loving way that You never lead me with that kind of voice.  Help me to hear Your voice saying: “You are in exactly the right place, doing exactly the right thing at exactly the right time.  You have all you need.  All is well.”  I become still now for a few minues just to be with You.  Thank YOU for being with ME – ALL the time.  And so it is……… AMEN.

Humble Brilliance

heartshinepic   We are ALL perfect creations of a perfect Creator.  We are NEVER outside the power, protection and presence of our Creator.  There is NO power in the Universe more powerful than that Creator and It does NOT make mistakes.  Therefore, our true Self,  can not be flawed.  There is a message in a literary work entitled the Course In Miracles that states: “I am as God created me.”  It is the only message repeated there more than once.

Can we make mistakes?  Of course we can….. and we do.  Can we think and act in ways less than our perfect Self?  Certainly, we can…. and we do.  But nothing we ever think or do changes the essential essence of who we are and what we are capable of being.  At the moment we divert in thought, word or deed from our perfection, an opportunity to correct it or forgive it is made available to us.  We will not recognize that opportunity, however, if we are intent upon seeing ourselves as essentially less than enough.

Our perfection and our capacity for personal happiness and for being a positive impact on the world is never diminished and never out of reach, no matter our circumstances.  Our capacity for goodness is nothing mediocre.  Each of us is created with magnificent purpose and capability for profound and dazzling brilliance.   To think otherwise is to think in error.

So much of our culture has taught us that humility is of supreme importance. The problem with the traditional teaching of humility is that it means we must not think highly of ourselves.  But spiritually speaking, it is by far more arrogant to think we are less than brilliant than it is to know we are brilliant.  It is arrogant because it says that God made a mistake.  It is to say that our abilities, our actions, our decisions are more powerful than God in us.   It is arrogant when we think that something we have done or not done is more powerful than God’s capability to correct it.

The Universe is created to support us in every way.  The problem is that we do not believe this.  The problem is we do not love ourselves as God loves us and, thus, we block the miracles we are entitled to and the miracles that are to come through us to bless the world.  We are more frightened of the idea that we are brilliant than we are of the idea that we are not.  We are frightened of being brilliant because we have adopted as true the belief of a limited, incapable, error-ridden self.  With this as our self-view, being brilliant is terrorizing because we do not believe we could ever live up to it.

The world would have us believe that accepting ourselves as immensely capable and worthy of miraculous and wonderful things is grandiose and unattractive.  There is a big difference between self-confidence or self-acceptance and conceit.  You see, when we accept the perfection and capacity for brilliance within us (because we know we are a creation of a perfect Creator), we realize that it is also true about everyone. Therefore,  the recognition of our own capacity for brilliance does not set us above anyone else.  We do not see ourselves as better than others.  Our brillance does not have anything to do with a comparison to someone else.  We humbly accept our assignment to be the Light that we are created to be and allow others the same.  No one will ever be served by our diminishment.  We will never be happy, content or at peace by a type of humility that is self-degrading or self-limiting.

The great example and teacher of Truth – Jesus – told us “You are the Light of the world!”  He also said in reference to the miracles he performed, “These things you can do also.  In fact, greater things than these shall you do.”  Begin now to be willing to rid yourself of all ideas of your being less than a perfect creation of a perfect Creator.  Overcome your fear of brilliance by going to God for help in seeing the Truth of who you are.  It matters not your age, your race, your socio-economic status, your physical abilities, your past mistakes.  Right now, wherever you are……….. you are a brilliant beacon of Light and Love.  Claim it!

The PrayerDear Spirit/Creator/God,  Within my mind lies some fear of claiming the total maginitude of my capacity to be a brilliant being.  And yet, if I am created by You, how could I be less than magnificent?  I ask You to help me accept my capacity for great goodness.  I humbly allow Your intention for my  fabulous life to unfold now.  Clear my mind of all false ideas of limitation.  In service to Your will for my existence, I say “yes” to being brilliant.  Thank you very much.  And so it is……  AMEN.
